I went from being in my first role in sales, where I was typically the worst seller in a team of 5, to becoming one of the top sales people on my sales floor in another role.
After that role, I then went onto BT a few years later and totally smashed it there as an Outbound and then Inbound Sales Executive, where I was managing key accounts. I got a huuuuuge buzz whenever commission was involved and loved speaking to people and finding solutions for their problem.
As a business owner, ask yourself:
– What problem are you solving?
– Are you setting yourself sales targets?
– What is your commission/pay?
– Are you seeing money come into your business yet?
Working several years in sales and doing really well on bonuses and incentive schemes, I realised I had a genuine passion for managing customer relationships and marketing. So much so that I went onto study my degree in Marketing and Communications, while working part time. I managed to secure a place on the BT Retail Graduate Programme for a Marketing Manager role. And every other job after that for the next 15 years was working on planning and implementing huge marketing campaigns. That was all before launching my own business!
And I was thrown in the deep end!
So I do get it, it’s not nice being out of your comfort zone! And we can put off tasks we don’t think we are capable of doing. That said, if you are focused and truly passionate about what you are doing and you want to see some money coming in, you should consider what’s holding you back. If you are not yet making enough sales:
– Is it a lack of planning?
– Is it a lack of budget?
– Do you not have enough time?
– Are you unsure of how to sell?
I know now that I hated selling in my first job because I lacked confidence in the product, there was no real team, I wasn’t satisfied in the job and I had no real passion. So how about you? Are you lacking passion in what you’re doing?
